You have been given a lab slip for a postoperative sperm count. This lab test is to be carried out approximately three months following your vasectomy. During this time be certain to maintain birth control measures.
Between the time of your surgery and the time that you have your first sperm count, it is very important that you have a minimum of 30 ejaculations. If you do fewer than 30 ejaculations, chances are high that you will have a test that shows sperm still in your semen. This will result in the need for extra testing and additional expense and inconvenience to you. If you have any questions about this, please contact your physician.
We need to obtain at least two consecutive negative (no sperm seen) results, done at least one month apart, before you may discontinue birth control measures. If the sperm counts reveal the presence of sperm, you will be advised by your physician to repeat sperm counts until two consecutive negative results are obtained.
These specimens may be submitted to Quest Lab at the Southdale Medical Building (6545 France Ave S #200 Edina) or at the Urologic Physicians' Burnsville office at 303 E Nicollet Blvd. An appointment is not required. Be sure that the lid of your specimen is closed tightly. Be sure that your specimen cup is labeled with your name. Please allow at least 10 days for results to be called to you from one of our clinic nurses.
If you do not receive your results in within 10 days of your test, please feel free to call our office for your results (952) 920-7660
