POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING
TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF THE PROSTATE
(TURP)
Following a TURP, it will take six to eight weeks for your bladder and prostate areas to heal completely. You may pass small blood clots or small pieces of tissue during this time, but this is not unusual.
For the first six weeks:
- Always empty your bladder whenever you feel the urge to urinate. Do not hold urine in your bladder.
- Avoid heavy lifting, heavy physical exertion, long walks or long trips. Short walks and slow stair climbing are permissible.
- Do not strain to have a bowel movement. If bowels become constipated, take two tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia daily until movement is normal or soft.
- Drink six glasses of liquid every day. Include at least three glasses of water in this total amount.
- Take a daily tub bath.
- Eat a well-balanced diet. Follow the diet you were on before surgery.
Other important information:
- Driving a vehicle will not be permitted for 1-2 weeks.
- Use caution in winter driving, and avoid driving-related activities, such as tire changing or shoveling snow.
- Do not engage in intercourse for at least four weeks or until your prostate has healed. Check with your doctor at your first routine postoperative appointment to determine if your prostate has healed.
- Take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
Call your doctor if:
- You are unable to pass your urine.
- Have painful voiding, loss of bladder control, or increased frequency of urination.
- Have chills or fever.
- Pass large blood clots or your urine remains bloody during urination. It is not unusual for urine to be blood tinged when starting stream.
See your doctor for a postoperative checkup in four to six weeks. Call ahead to the office for an appointment as soon as you are discharged. The telephone number is 952-920-7660. Any additional questions may be directed to your physician.
