Your physician has ordered a test called an IVP (intravenous pyelogram) to assist him in your diagnosis. This is an X-ray examination of your kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It is performed by a radiologist with the assistance of a technologist.
You will be asked to remove your clothing for the X-ray. You will be given a gown.
The technologist will insert a needle in a vein to deliver a substance called contrast medium. The contrast medium helps to visualize the kidneys, ureters and bladder on the X-ray film. During the injection, you may feel warm and flushed, and have a metallic taste in your mouth. This is a normal reaction and will only last a minute or so. Let the examiner know if you begin to itch, feel short of breath, or are otherwise uncomfortable.
You will be asked to change position at different times during the examination. You will be asked to remain perfectly still several times and to hold your breath so that X-rays can be taken.
