What to Expect: Some "bruising" of the scrotum may be noted, with black and blue colors as blood in the tissues spreads. This is followed by a yellow and brown color. In time, all discoloration goes away. Expect some mild discomfort for the first 2 to 4 days following procedure. Your incision may "gape." This is not unusual after the stitches have dissolved (up to 4 weeks after the procedure).
Activity: Bedrest for the first 24 hours following procedure is the way to avoid problems although light activity with periods of rest and elevation of the scrotum may be fine. You may gradually increase your activity over the following week. Avoid strenuous exercise and do not lift anything greater that 15 pounds (including children) during this week.
If you have a job which requires physical activity, it is wise to wear your athletic supporter for the first week after the procedure.
Wound Care: Wear an athletic support or a tight pair of jockey shorts for the first 7 days following procedure, even to sleep. Ice packs should be placed over the scrotum during the first 24 hours. You may shower 24 hours after surgery. The incisional area (with or without sutures) can be cleansed with soap and water.
Diet: No restrictions.
Problems that should be reported: Fever greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Moderate or severe swelling under the skin incision or involving the scrotum. Discolored (yellowish or brown) drainage from the incisional site should be reported. Clear even slightly bloody, watery drainage is to be expected.
Other: Wait 10 days after the procedure to have sexual activity or ejaculation. Use protected intercourse until you have a zero sperm count. To know this, you will need to have two semen analyses. This should be coordinated with your care provider at your follow up visit.
