Now that your sling operation is behind you...
...there are a few things that you should know to make the rest of your recovery as smooth as possible.
There are a number of things that you may (or may not) experience over the next few days, weeks, and even months. Please don't be alarmed if these occur because they are normal and will, almost certainly, continue to resolve as time goes on.
burning with urination
this will resolve; remember to take the antibiotics!
urinary frequency
don't stray too far from the restroom until this improves
urgency
if this affects you, make sure you go to the restroom before you really have to
some leakage, especially associated with urgency
you will find this alarming, but it will get better
some hesitation before the stream begins
please be patient in the restroom
a slower urinary stream
a pulling sensation in the lower abdomen, especially with movement
vaginal spotting
although this can go on for a few months, it usually resolves in a few weeks feel free to use external protection; avoid tampons at this point
With this in mind, we would expect that you will gradually increase you activity at this point. Please keep these activity guidelines in mind.
You can drive when you are sure that you are a safe driver...
that means that you are able to respond to an emergency situation
Please don't lift anything heavier than a gallon jug of milk or a telephone book...
this goes until the 4 week recovery process is complete and your exam is normal
Some romance is okay...
holding hands, hugging and kissing are allowed
please continue to keep all objects out of the vagina until the 4 week examination
Go to work if you feel up to it...
some women with limited physical exertion begin to work at this point
Finally, please keep the following issues in mind as you look forward to the next visit in about 3 weeks.
- please take all of the antibiotics that you were given
- don't pick at the stitch at the corner of your incision; it will fall off by itself in a few weeks
- if your bladder is very full and you cannot void CALL US
- please remember to keep your appointment for the 4 week examination with Dr. Bernstein
- feel free to call us with questions and problems
